The Conspiracy Theory

Conspiracy theories come and go in life and cover everything from landings on the moon to the death of John Lennon, from the da Vinci code to the untimely death of Diana Princess of Wales. But what about the so-called addictive properties of nicotine? Say it doesn't really exist, or at least not in the way we have been led to believe?

Impossible, you may think! But have you ever seen anyone on a TV documentary, or maybe in real life, who is addicted to some sort of drug, say heroin, as an example, when they can not get their 6-hourly fix - they are hallucinating and shaking uncontrollably; you can see the pain in their face, the uncontrollable sweating and muscle spasms which follow. They look as though they are literally dying.

Run that picture in your mind at the same time as the one about the so-called nicotine addict who enters Heathrow airport to check in on a 24-hour long flight to Australia with his wife and children. He states that he can't go for more than three hours without a cigarette, but you see him laughing and joking with the check-in staff in departures. You see him browsing round the duty-free shops, and buying his children gifts in the airport departure lounge. You see him relaxing with his wife, talking and laughing as they plan their holiday activities. You see him settling down to have a glass of wine with his in-flight meal and then start to watch a film as they travel towards their destination.

What you won't see, of course, is the smoker shaking uncontrollably, sweating, feverish, a gibbering wreck, suffering terrible withdrawal symptoms, because this simply does not happen. For some reason the smoker miraculously manages to temporarily turn off or put on hold his apparent addiction because it's inconvenient right now, and then just as incredibly is able to turn the addiction back on again as soon as he finds himself back in a smoking-friendly location. It's quite amazing really!

The same "addiction switch" seems to be available to smokers whenever they have the flu for instance, when somehow they can go for several days without thinking about cigarettes or needing to smoke at all, and then, just as soon as they are feeling better again, the addiction switch magically reactivates, and the smoker feels the need to light up once again.

But why when we were just children would we be led to believe that as soon as you had a cigarette that you would become addicted for life, if it were not true?

The governments of the world who were making billions of dollars a year in taxes wouldn't want us to believe that would they? And what about the manufacturers, surely they would put their financial gains secondary, and inform the population of the planet about the truth about their health, wouldn't they?

So okay, maybe you don't want to sign up to the conspiracy theory about nicotine, but have we all been brainwashed into thinking that it is stronger than it actually is, and have we been misled into believing that the journey out of nicotine addiction is a difficult one? What about the hundreds of thousands of people every year who just stop smoking without any help whatsoever? How can they do that?
