Rid yourself of exam nerves permanently...

Exam success and confidence in preparing for exams depends as much on your state of mind as on academic knowledge. There is nothing worse than, after all your hard study, you walk into your exam and your mind goes blank: your nerves and anxiety get the better of you and your brain simply stops working properly!

This well-known phenomenon in psychology is known as state-dependant memory. The state you are in determines what you can remember, and if you are in a very different state to when you learned something in the first place, then it is very difficult to recall things. If you are very anxious, your brain is simply in the wrong state for thinking straight!

Most people experience some degree of anxiety about exams. Whilst a certain amount of exam stress is and can be used as a motivating force, it is important to keep on top of exam anxiety. The best way to do this is to be organised. Some people seem to be able to pass exams or remember all kinds of facts and figures without putting in a substantial amount of work; this is not necessarily because they are academically better, it's just that they are able to use their mind in a relaxed, confident and organised way in order to achieve exam success.

Imagine if you were able to approach every exam feeling confident, focused, relaxed and with a clear mind.In an exam, you need calmness combined with a little excitement in order to give you that extra edge. A little stress actually improves memory and recall!

Hypnosis is an effective way to re-train your brain to respond with the sort of emotional response that will help your performance. We can use hypnosis to train your unconscious mind to provide you with just the right blend of relaxation and focus when you get to your exam.

Some people suffer with stress more than others, and it is important for them to learn some stress reduction techniques. Obvious stress reduction measures include avoiding drinking too many caffeinated drinks, eating regularly and healthily, and making sure you build some regular moderate exercise into your day to boost your energy and clear your mind. The physical symptoms associated with stress are caused by the hormone adrenaline, which is necessary to prepare the body for the 'fight or flight' reaction. When overproduced by chronic stress, adrenaline simply causes unpleasant physical symptoms such as racing heart, over-breathing and muscular tension, rather than being of any use to you. Physical activity uses up the adrenaline, for the purpose it is intended.

Relaxation techniques learned via hypnotherapy help to keep you feeling calm and balanced, improve your concentration levels and also help you to sleep better. A typical hypnotherapy session involves using progressive relaxation, starting by clenching your feet and toes and then gradually unclenching the muscles and releasing the tension. We then move up the body doing the same process until your whole body feels completely relaxed. You are then asked to practise breathing deeply, evenly and slowly, and as you develop this slow rhythm, you imagine that you are lying on a warm beach, watching the waves.

Hypnosis for exam skills, memory improvement and for what is becoming known as general student stress, is invaluable, whether you need help with A levels, GCSEs, university finals or any other academic issue. Exam stress and poor memory represent two very common reasons for clients seeking hypnotherapy. Learning self-hypnosis and working on powerful self suggestions can certainly help with preparing for exams in terms of study and revision.
