Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a relaxed, focused state of concentration. The British Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis states:

"In therapy, hypnosis usually involves the person experiencing a sense of deep relaxation with their attention narrowed down, and focused on appropriate suggestions made by the therapist."

These suggestions help people make positive changes within themselves. Long gone are the days when hypnosis was seen as waving watches and controlling people's minds. In a hypnotherapy session you are always in control and you are not made to do anything. It is generally accepted that all hypnosis is ultimately self-hypnosis. A hypnotist merely helps to facilitate your experience - hypnotherapy is not about being made to do things, in fact it is the opposite, it is about empowerment.

Until recently it was assumed that the state of hypnosis was similar to sleep, or that the mind was somehow unconscious. It has been discovered on scans taken during hypnosis, however, that there is a specific state that the brain enters into when it is receptive to suggestion. It is not an unusual state of mind, and you may feel like you are not in a trance at all: most people simply feel relaxed.

There is a change in the brain wave activity, similar to that time just before sleep when the alpha state is entered. Your brain's waking state is a beta brain wave, just as you are going to sleep it changes to alpha and then to delta and theta in deep sleep. The alpha state is a very dreamy, pleasant state. During this time the mind is very open to visualisations and creating a rich sensory experience. The more real the experience becomes in the subconscious mind during this state, the more effect it will have on your waking behaviour.

Hypnotherapy is widely used now in a variety of different fields including medicine and childbirth, dentistry, education, law enforcement and professional sports, and the beneficial use of hypnosis in the treatment of both nicotine addiction and obesity is well documented. A survey in 2004 in The Times Newspaper quoted hypnotherapy as being one of the most successful methods available in the treatment of smoking addiction.
