The Power of the Mind
"Whatever your mind can conceive and believe it can achieve!"
Napoleon Hill (1883 - 1970)
Successful people always create a picture in their minds of what their ultimate goal looks like. They create an image so strong and real that it motivates them completely and literally draws them forward towards success. Top sports professionals also motivate themselves by visualising their success immediately before competing.
Up until the middle of the last century people believed that it was not possible for man to run a mile in less than four minutes, simply because no athlete had ever managed to do it before. Then on the 6th May 1954, medical student Roger Bannister suddenly achieved the "impossible". And strangely enough, as soon as this one man successfully broke the four-minute mile, many other athletes have since been inspired to follow suit. So what happened exactly? Nothing had changed other than the fact that people now actually believed it was possible after all.
Motivation is one of the key factors involved in being successful:
if someone is motivated enough they can achieve just about anything in life. As an example, hardened cocaine addicts in the USA who had previously been unsuccessful with just about every type of treatment to overcome their addiction, were apparently offered $100,000 cash to produce consistently drug-free urine samples for a period of three months. Miraculously, the addicts all managed to stay clean for the trial period, whereas previously three days had been the best result.
Similarly, people who have been overweight for most of their life, and then suffer a stroke or heart attack, when told by their doctor to lose weight in order to avoid further risk, suddenly find that they can stick to a diet and lose weight easily, whereas prior to their health scare, of course, this had seemed an impossible feat.
The two examples above simply reinforce the importance of motivation in making any change in life: if you want something enough and you believe it is possible, you can and will achieve it.
Your mind really is a powerful tool, and you can only be truly motivated to do something if both your conscious and your subconscious minds are working together, locked onto your goal, and you literally become single-minded on the task. Your mind then acts like an automatic guidance system, and at this stage willpower is effectively irrelevant, because you are actually doing exactly what you really want to do.
During the hypnosis sessions you are frequently asked to picture yourself looking slim, attractive, healthy and happy, so that your subconscious mind then accepts this vision as your new self-image that you are working towards. Once this new vision of yourself is deeply embedded in your subconscious mind, then it becomes far more attractive to you than the temptation of eating something that will make it harder for you to reach your goal. In other words, the long-term benefits of being slim and healthy far outweigh the short-term gratification you may get from eating a piece of chocolate cake for example.
Think positively - you have nothing to lose!
Our minds have great influence over our behaviour, and the human mind works best when it concentrates on a positive goal. We tend to talk about "losing" weight, but our mind thinks that if we lose something we can't rest until we find it again. A much more positive concept for your mind to accept is for you to see yourself not losing weight, but moving closer and closer to your target weight.
