Bedfont Scientific Smokerlyzer System
At Elite's Fuengirola Clinic a Smokerlyzer
system was recently installed, the machine when connected to a computer
analyses smoker's blood carbon monoxide levels.
The
concept of breathing into a device to
measure alcohol content in the body has now been adapted to measure
carbon monoxide levels in the blood. Health professionals use the
machine, rather than law-enforcement officers, to assess the damage
smokers do to themselves. Regular 20-a-day smokers often get readings
of 20 to 30 whilst heavier smokers can get up to 40 or 50 non-smokers
register readings of ten or lower. The amount of carbon monoxide in the
"end expired air" corresponds approximately to the concentration of
carboxyhaemoglobin in the blood.
Carbon monoxide binds to haemoglobin more readily than oxygen and
reduces the release of oxygen from the blood. Smokers can have up to
20% less oxygen circulating in their blood than non-smokers - the
differences in daily consumption account for the major differences in
the results of different smokers. As a general rule it is estimated
that 20 a day smokers are "heavier" than those on 10 a day, but the
Smokerlyzer test can reveal significant differences between smokers -
for example, a 15 a day smoker may achieve a test reading far in excess
of that obtained by a 30 a day smoker, simply because they inhale more
deeply and extract more from each cigarette smoked - attempts to cut
down often cause smokers to get more out of the cigarettes available to
them. They will regulate their own nicotine intake (often quite
unconsciously by taking bigger puffs), puffing more frequently, and
smoking further down the butt.
Elite Clinics are using a Smokerlyzer as an aid to assess whether their
clients taking a course of treatment to stop smoking have successfully
ceased within the time period - and taking the test before they start
the treatment provides strong emotional support as they see levels
dropping as the days go by.
