Questions People Ask
Is it inevitable that I will put on weight after I stop smoking?
The answer is "No" - not everyone puts on weight when they stop smoking. A number of people actually end up losing weight because their increased energy levels give them the desire to do more exercise.
It's a good idea to keep healthy snacks handy, such as fresh fruit, or raw vegetables to nibble on; this will also help to maintain you weight as well as replenish your vitamin levels.
Will I have trouble sleeping when I stop smoking?
Probably not - insomnia only affects about 25% of people when they first stop smoking. Although it is annoying and can make you irritable and sleepy during the daytime, it is only a temporary phase. If you do have problems sleeping, you should try natural sleep-inducing remedies such as having a warm drink (not caffeine-laden!) and a bath before going to bed.
I have heard that initially, when I stop smoking, I may feel light-headed. Why is this?
It has been suggested that this may due to the sudden increase in the oxygen supply to the brain, although the exact cause is unknown. The good news is that this tends to fade after 48 hours and it is nothing to worry about.
How long will the cravings last and how will I cope best?
Coping with cravings is the most troublesome aspect of stopping smoking. Cravings are obviously strongest and most frequent during the first couple of weeks, and then they gradually diminish and become more infrequent with time.
Taking glucose tablets, keeping busy and avoiding your own high-risk situations for a few days will make it easier on yourself until the cravings start to subside.
But how about denying the cravings rather than giving in to them? In the earlier part of your life you managed to survive and have fun without nicotine: you can do just the same again right now if you really want to. If you experience a craving just be aware of exactly how long it lasts - it is only ever a temporary feeling. And remember that a craving is precisely that - just a feeling, not a command that must be obeyed.
Does it count if I have the odd joint at parties or with friends?
Smoking joints that contain tobacco is not a good idea, and often leads to a lapse. There is a psychological association between the two drugs that often has catastrophic results.
Will it help me stop if I cut down?
This has never proven successful, and when people do smoke fewer cigarettes they tend to inhale deeper and smoke each cigarette for longer, i.e. taking more drags. As a result there are no real positive benefits to just cutting down.
In addition to seeing clients at the clinic, Martin and Marion undertake private, home visits, both in Spain and internationally, subject to availability and negotiation.
